Shearwater is on my mind since the NYC show is still in my short-term memory. So here's my rant....

Why isn't "Castaways" a bigger hit for Shearwater?

I think I'm being fairly objective as I was more of a casual fan until TGA was released. I liked "Rook" and bought the CD in mid 2008, then started going into their back catalog care of my Rhapsody subscription service. My take on Shearwater was that their music was very good but would usually take a few listens to really appreciate. I didn't even realize that they had a new album coming out until two months ago.

However, I feel "Castaways" is the exception to this - I distinctly remember being hooked into that song as song as I heard the chorus for the first time. One of those rare occasions when you first hear a song and it grabs you so completely that you need to drop what you're doing to listen to the rest of it (so rare that I could probably count on two hands the number of songs that have made this type of impression on me). The chorus has a great hook, the drum line is awesome, and the ending of the song is one of the best I've ever heard. I'm just surprised that this isn't a song that hasn't made a bigger impact, so far.

Btw, if you haven't already realized, "Castaways" is what made me a actual fan and got me to the NYC show, as well as this board. That was the turning point.

It actually took me longer to get into Castaways than the other tracks I heard before the releases of TGA and Rook, but I see where you're coming from. I think that even though it's a more accessible song than many of the others, it's still not catchy or anthemic in a way that spells instant radio/blog success. Oddly, in spite of some pretty substantial release hype for Rook it didn't seem to take off as much as it could (or should) have, and I fear the same will happen with TGA. There does seem to be a slow but steady increase in fanbase, though, and there's certainly a "cult" following building.
