Just wondering if anyone else has read Mark Cocker's "Crow Country"? Well written and informative, although I have a few niggles....
There's good footage of the rook roosts in Norfolk which so inspired him here:

That's what the crows are doing over Hartford now. From the highway, it looks like a black, amorphous cloud hovering over the west of the city. They take off at dusk and fly from the trees around the Hartford Seminary (on my block) over Real Art Ways and into the park nearby. Thousands of them - all together.

Needless to say, I make excuses to stand outside at around 4:30PM most days now.

I'll be uploading video soon...

What an amazing sight! When I lived in Cleveland, a friend and I would go to the see the buzzards roost in Hinckley, and while I always hoped for a spectacle like the one on the video, we rarely saw more than a few come down at a time.

Thank you for the link and the book suggestion! I would also HIGHLY recommend John Marzluff and Tony Angell's In the Company of Crows and Ravens. Marzluff is doing some really cool research on crow (and corvid in general) behavior, and this book is a compendium of that work, other work and an overview in general of the human relationship with these birds.

We have these enormous fall flocks in Seattle--Marzluff gives suggestions for what they are doing (Based on his and others research). One of the flocks occurs at a parking lot, that used to be a landfill. At the time of the landfill, the crows used the site to feed, but now, he suggests, it is a tradition for them to meet there--they have met there for 40 years and there seems to be no other explanation.

According to Marzluff, "In the dim light, you can wade through crows indifferent to your presence. They walk away as you approach but appear to be in no hurry. their business is here on the ground. Yet there is no food, no permanent water, nothing but black macadam."

Here's the video of the , as promised. The video is about a minute long; they fly overhead like that for a solid 45 minutes or so.

that's good: looks like they're on their way somewhere: maybe from feeding to the roost?
I just ordered "In the Company of Crows and Ravens" it looks like a good read.

BUT: if you want to see really spectacular flocking, starlings are the birds for it (forward over the boring intro):

also (with the added bonus of a peregrine strike!):
