If you have yet to peruse “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss” (University of Chicago Press, 2007), by Claire Nouvian, go find yourself a copy to look at. It is worth studying, for the images of the Dumbo Octopi alone--critters that are apparently encountered by submersibles sitting solitarily in the dark on the floor of the deepest ocean.
Of course, all the creatures photographed in this book, and all the creatures we don't yet know about in that deep ocean, are probably threatened because of what we've done and are doing to the seas.
