I've just bought the LP at a French independent record store and I have just listened ti it once so far. My first reaction is that, though this not reach Rook's peaks - such as Century Eye or the Snow Leopard -, it has its moments, Castaways is my favorite so far. It is too brief, though, like all of Shearwater's best songs.

Still I have two issues with the vinyl edition. First it does not incorporate the voucher to download the Mp3 tracks. It is a Matador import record (though Beggars is releasing the CD version in Europe) so I am quite surprised that the coupon is missing. Second, if I want to listen to False Sentinel - one of the best tracks, BTW -, I have to move the headshell manually. It doesn't go there automatically. I thought this could be quite normal for a bonus track, but I haven't read anything similar here so I was wondering whether your copy is different.

They're all that way.

Make sure you seriously dig in the record sleeve. Mine (and others have stated) found it stuck all the way in the back of the sleeve.

Yes, I had read previous posts and tried that, but it seems that there is really no such coupon in my copy !

E-mail Matador. They responded to me very quickly when I had an issue with my download for the Basia Bulat album.

And someone mentioned a problem with the mailing of their lp. I think Matador packaged it just fine for that. But I don't know if they have the same company doing the packaging for all their vinyl, but both I've bought this year (Basia and Shearwater) have been shrinkwrapped so tightly that it has crushed a portion of the album cover.

I finally received my LP from Matador!
(too bad, the corners are a little bit damaged)
the artwork is really magnificent in this size ; I'm amazed by the album, its high level of unity.. the music totally merges itself into images of sea, island and travels, supported by the dossier's metaphors.

finally, we've got a pure poetic music.

Got mine today - both vinyl and CD. The vinyl cover was a little bit damaged in the upper left corner, as apparently has been the case for some others. I can confirm that it's not the packaging for shipping it, it's been damaged by the plastic around it which is wrapped too tightly.

Anyway, it's absolutely beautiful! I'll spend some more time with it before giving my opinion on the music, but the packaging in itself is great.

Since I bought both the vinyl and the CD (and the dossier) I have a spare mini-dossier if anyone wants it. Just send me a PM and I'll mail it to you for free.

I finally found the time to sit around and listen to the vinyl on headphones. All I can say is  I can't believe how much is going on at any given time on this record, from traditional instruments to strings to mallet percussion to noise samples. It's crazy!

Also, I noticed on the inside of the Gatefold on the LP that they spelled Jonathan's name 'Jonatham'.

I got the same problem, I live in France and bought the vinyl edition at their concert at Le Nouveau Casino

I was surprised too to not see the coupon inside the sleeve (and I doublechecked, it's really not there), so I sent a mail to matador and here is their answer:

"There actually aren't supposed to be download codes outside of N. America"

I'm quite surprised since the download codes were with the vinyl editions of "Palo Santo" & "Rook" (which I both bought in France), so it's kinda disappointing because I really prefer the vinyl edition with "the silver bodies" and "false sentinels"

so ok, I have a vinyl turntable that can upload the tracks in mp3 but still, I won't be able to have the third bonus track which doesn't appear on the LP...

(for "false sentinels", the fact that you have to put it manually is normal: jonathan said that they put a "lock groove" before it intentionaly... a lock groove is made to be played endlessly like the one at the end of 'sgt. pepper", there actually is a french comix author who made a comix only about it)

Now, that's exactly the kind of behaviour from a record company that - in my opinion - encourages illegal downloading. Not nice.

I woke up this morning to 'Black Eyes' on the radio! (RRR for anyone in Melbourne.) The announcer said how much she was enjoying the album. Her co-host said they reminded him of Yes. The other said that the Druids would be happy this morning, and they all speculated about whether the band had beards because the album artwork gave nothing away. (It's breakfast radio so there's a lot of aimless talk.)

Anyway, nice to hear TGA on the radio, beards or no beards.

I also read today in the local music press that RRR had TGA in its top ten for the week. Not sure what that means - they're community radio so there are no playlists - but I guess they're saying, 'Listen to this new release - we think it's good.'

It was strange waking up to that song because I'd been playing TGA all weekend. My alarm went off just as it started. In my half-asleep state my mind was thinking, 'What is that? I know that song... What is it?... Ohhhhhhh!'

I think Australia deserves a Shearwater tour. We're playing your songs on the radio, after all.
