Belly's "Full Moon, Empty Heart" is a great suggestion! Or maybe even "Low Red Moon" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17EaFAircWs).

I also liked the suggestion of Mazzy Star's "Into Dust."

What popped into my head, though, given the sad news about Alex Chilton was Big Star's "Kangaroo" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6a9yxUyOOI). The original and the This Mortal Coil version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYon5LMyU7M) of this song are all-time favorites of mine.

All that said, I still think Talk Talk's "The Rainbow" was the perfect cover song for Shearwater. So glad they did that.

Two songs that I think would be absolutely epic if covered: Radiohead's "Lucky" and Harry Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire". In fact, every time I listen to "Jump Into the Fire" I wonder why Shearwater hasn't already covered it.

Oh, and I also think they could do something awesome with The Grateful Dead's "Eyes of the World".

I had some other ideas too, but they escape me at the moment.

How about the old Gong classic Flying Teapot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvYNb67B5dQ

....and I quite like to hear covers that are very far vocally from the original. Jonathan's voice would give an interesting twist to any song by Dan Michaelson

in answer to special___k who suggested Hit me Baby One More Time, even the Travis version doesn't match this one from The Reentrants.

Mad Mad Moon from Genesis should be a great cover with Jonathan voice. This song was never played live by Genesis.

I would really be happy if someone have a link to download Life's What You Make It and Does Caroline Know by Elbows

I have got the Elbow interview about Talk Talk.

Every time I hear Shearwater and Jonathan Meiburg voice, I think, Shearwater have to make an entire album of Talk Talk and Mark Hollis cover which song like:

The Rainbow (again), Inheritance, Stump, Myrrhman, Pictures Of Bernadette, After The Flood, Eden, Desire, I Believe In You, Happiness Is Easy, Time It's Time ...

for me (I love both) it should be great for sure, but for Shearwater or Talk Talk fan, I think it should be great too !

I hope Jonathan will read that message

Something really sexy like "I'm on Fire." Shearwater tends to stay away from the romantic, n'est pas? Not that that's bad! I mean, I LOVE them. But...well, everyone needs a sexy, romantic song once in a while. :-)

I'm quite glad that they don't. :D
Plus, I find a lot of romance in songs like "Nobody" or "The Silver Bodies". Just in a different sense, much more universal and principal, rather than "Oh Baby Baby" or "Your eyes blabla".

Oh and plus: Check the back-catalogue, there quite some romantic songs on the Thieves EP, Winged Life, Everybody Makes Mistakes and The Dissolving Room. :)

^ Thanks for the recommendations! Yeah, I didn't mean shmaltzy, maudlin lovey songs (I don't think "I'm on Fire" is shmaltzy AT ALL - particularly the Tori Amos & Bat for Lashes covers...but it's still hard to beat Bruce's smokey voice...). I guess I'm glad SW doesn't do more love relationship-y songs too...it's definitely one of the many things that makes them unique, I think. But seriously -- take the melody & vibe & instrumentation of An Insular Life -- I don't know what JM is saying most of the time, but I always imagine that it's about torrid love (I know it's not). Like, think the film, "the Piano." Torrid, man.

you're right, that's what i meant, you get the "feeling" without the stereotypical phrases, which is the best way i could imagine it.

bat for lashes and tori did cover "i'm on fire"? gotta find and check that out.

I have both the Bat for Lashes and Tori covers; here's the youtube versions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k83xsEAFig Tori Amos (live)

Driving back from the Tucson show, I realized I'd really love to see Shearwater cover Maybe Sprout Wings from The Mountain Goats (I have this thing for songs that reference canaries and mines; the idea of it has always broken my heart and is probably part of why White Waves is my favorite), and -- well, in the vein of love songs and the people who sing them -- Stories of the Street or Famous Blue Raincoat from Leonard Cohen.

Bird on a Wire is probably more fitting, though. :3

Last night at the show in San Francisco Jonathan performed a gorgeous a cappella cover of Vic Chestnutt's "Big Huge Valley" as an encore. It was the highlight of my weekend :D

Hrm....I've been doing some thinking, and I would really love to hear them do "The Tower of Learning" by Rufus Wainwright, and "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" by Arcade Fire.

I also think Jonathan would do a gorgeous cover of Josh Ritter's "The Temptation of Adam". Such a touching, yet disconcerting song. Just his forté...

I have to second someone's suggestion of "I'm on Fire". That would be amazing!

OK, one more that just jumped into my head: "Blue Lips" by Regina Spektor.
