Which songs do you think Shearwater should (or could perfectly) cover?

The first songs that come to my mind are my favourites by british singer/songwriters Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.

Kate Bush - "And Dream Of Sheep"

Peter Gabriel - "Here Comes The Flood"

Ooooh ooooh!

More Van Morrison!

Sweet Thing or Queen of the Slipstream are two I think would work well for Shearwater, and they happen to be the two I would most love to hear!

Some Neil MacArthur (aka Colin Blunstone) might be nice...

And of course I am still struck by JM's "God Only Knows" live performance a few years back, so some more Brian Wilson would be most welcome!

Now this is creepy! On the ride home from the Hannover gig we were discussing the exact same thing!

Ohboy, I'm gonna spam this topic :)

But it's a tough one. I'll have to put some thought into it.

I have one right away:

Some Mazzy Star, preferably "Into Dust"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H88g_Eew4PY&feature=related

And I'll have to think about which pop-pearl you usually have to decline due to intellectual pretense but would be funny to hear in a shearwater-coat.

I love for example what the Manic Street Preachers have done to Rihanna's "Umbrella"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqzovAbMhcA
(the live recodrings were so crabby we'll have to go with this one...)

And still amazing the Travis Cover of Britney's "Hit Me Baby One More Time"

Funny you should mention that - when I saw this thread last week, the first thing I thought of was Nickel Creek playing "Toxic" at some of their shows a few years back and thought maybe I should suggest something really "poppy". But of course I can't find the right suggestion.

How about Beyond Belief from Elivs Costello? A little more up SWs alley, and I would like to see how they would change up the instrumentation.

Ha! That's so weird. When I first played SW for my friend Aniela, I threw in some live covers JM has done and we started discussing what other songs a band with that scope and instrumentation should cover... "Beyond Belief" was one of the first we mentioned... of course, she and I always want to hear that  but it really would be fantastic by Shearwater!

Wow! Thanks for that. It's fantastic.

I'd say there's always some Britney left. Like "Oops I Did It Again".
I could teach them some easy choreograohy for the shows ;)

Or one of my longterm earwoms (yeah - i learned something today, seems the expression has been literally translated in to english...) "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know".

Then there's one of my alltime favorites of junk-pop-songs:
Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha"

But here's a real real one. As I was listening to some Shearwater Cover's today i thought it should be something you otherwise don't hear anymore. A song that has totally vanished.

Like "I Was Only Trying To Help" by the Kids from Fame (from the 80's TV series)

Vocals by Valerie Landsburg

So, yes I'm a pathetic romantic :)

Surely this is crying out for Jonathan's doomed-earth apocalyptic treatment:

Ts! No one's playing anymore?

I promised I'd spam it, I'm going to :)

So here's what sporting can do to you:

Just recently in the dressing room they were playing Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO8JWbG6bVw

and I was like - wow I can totally imagine Jonathan doing that. I'm not saying it's a great suggestion or even that I would die to hear Shearwater doing it. I just almost SEE Jonathan doing it...

And as I was riding to Depeche Mode's "A Question Of Lust"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2viu1yzUT8w

this week, i thought that - this would be really great with a nice guitar and some trompet...

And speaking of Kate Bush, I guess we all know Placebos "Running Up That Hill"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHXVXG2kXBo

Know this one?

Ra Ra Riot do a great Hounds of Love cover. I've seen them play it live twice and it is a real kicker.

I've always dreamt of Shearwater covering a Neil Young song, more specifically "On the Beach" or "Ambulance Blues"...maybe someday

This topic always seems to be in the back of my mind. I've been thinking lately about Belly's Full Moon Empty Heart, which has the great combination of some really high notes with plain old rocking out at the end.

A blogger over at mentalfloss posted video of a few of his favorite covers:

I especially like The Sign and will be learning that this weekend, including memorizing all of John Darnielle's commentary on it :)

Suddenly, out of nowhere, I got it in my head again today - I wanna hear this one from Shearwater!

the piano is totally shearwater, well, 30 years before! :)

some classic Pete Brown:

(but you can really pick any song of him, he's so shearwater in spirit)

Just having a tearful reminisce over Sparklehorse's music this morning. I think SW would do a beautiful version of 'Cow' from Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot. It has all the elements. Actually, they could tackle any Sparklehorse song and I'd be overjoyed.
