Issue No. 56 of The Big Takeover has a review of Thieves (by Michael Pearlstein)

A five-song EP following 2004's excellent Winged Life, the cover image continues to push their obsession with avians (one member is an ornithology student) -- and who doesn't like birds? This is a short but satisfying set of tunes, and a good place to begin your Shearwater journey if you haven't heard the album yet. The EP begins with "I can't wait" with a huge vocal chorus from Jon Meiburg that is instantly galvanizing; it's a gorgeous opener with big electric/acoustic guitar. The remaining four songs are as dark and lovely as anything you will hear in the genre. "You're The Coliseum" features Will Sheff's pleasantly gruff vocals, easing you into the more Americana side of Shearwater. "Mountain Laurel," with its military-style drumming and quiet banjo, shows off the band's diversity. "There's A Mark Where You Were Breathing" is Sheawater in moody winter chill mode, and closer "Near A Garden" is the hopeful coda, quiet and acoustic. This EP is so good... Time to check out Okkervil River, Meiburg and Sheff's other band. (
